◆ 72년 전통 제야의 종…강추위에도 인산인해

2026년 1월 1일 자정, 서울 종로구 보신각 앞은 영하 10도의 매서운 강추위에도 불구하고 새해를 맞이하려는 3만 2천여 명(서울시 추산)의 시민들로 인산인해를 이뤘다.

서울시는 12월 31일 밤 11시부터 1월 1일 새벽 12시 20분까지 보신각 일대에서 '2025 제야의 종 타종행사'를 개최했다. 보신각 타종행사는 1953년부터 이어져 온 대표적인 새해맞이 행사다.

제야의 종을 33번 타종하는 이유는 불교의 우주관 '33천(天)'에서 유래했다. 나라의 태평성대와 국민의 안녕을 기원하는 국태민안(國泰民安)의 의미를 담고 있다.

◆ 시민 영웅 11인과 함께한 타종

25년간 생명의 전화 상담을 이어온 김귀선씨, 등굣길 학생들에게 무료로 빵을 나누어준 김쌍식씨, 15년간 도시락 배달봉사를 진행한 이복단씨, 심폐소생술로 두 차례 생명을 구한 버스기사 정영준씨가 타종에 참여했다.

대한민국 계주 첫 세계 금메달리스트 나마디 조엘 진씨, 누리호 발사 성공을 주도한 박종찬씨, 노면 색깔 유도선을 개발한 윤석덕씨, 장애인 조정 선수 하재헌씨도 함께했다. 가수 션과 양희은, 작가 정세랑도 타종인사로 선정됐다.

◆ 전통과 현대 어우러진 다채로운 무대

타종 전 약 50분간 판소리와 합창 등 K-퍼포먼스가 펼쳐졌다. 병오년 붉은 말의 해를 상징하는 'LED 댄스 퍼포먼스'가 보신각 일대를 수놓았다.

33번의 타종이 끝난 뒤에는 록밴드 크라잉넛이 대표곡 '말달리자' 등을 부르며 2026년의 활기찬 시작을 알렸다. 붉은 말의 해라는 상징성과 역동적인 음악이 만나 현장은 열광의 도가니로 변했다.

◆ 경찰 1760명 투입…철저한 안전대책

이날 서울 보신각 행사에는 경찰관 1760명이 투입됐다. 보신각 주변에 안전관리 인력을 배치하고, 의료부스와 한파쉼터 4동을 운영했다.

서울시는 31일 오후 6시부터 1일 아침 7시까지 보신각 사거리 주변 도로를 전면 통제했다. 종각역은 무정차 통과했으며, 지하철과 시내버스는 새벽 2시까지 연장 운행했다.

올해는 보신각 뿐 아니라 명동과 광화문에서도 처음으로 새해 카운트다운 행사가 열렸다. 서울시는 총 29개 행사에 약 22만명의 인파가 운집할 것으로 예상하고 안전관리계획을 수립했다.

◆ 72-Year Tradition of Jeyaeui Jong…Packed Despite Freezing Weather

At midnight on January 1, 2026, the area in front of Bosingak in Jongno-gu, Seoul was packed with approximately 32,000 citizens (Seoul City estimate) eager to welcome the new year despite the bitter cold of -10°C.

Seoul City held the '2025 New Year's Eve Bell-Ringing Ceremony' at Bosingak from 11 PM on December 31 to 12:20 AM on January 1. The Bosingak bell-ringing ceremony has been a representative new year celebration since 1953.

The reason for ringing the bell 33 times originates from the Buddhist cosmological concept of '33 Heavens,' carrying the meaning of praying for national peace and prosperity.

◆ Bell-Ringing with 11 Citizen Heroes

Participants included Kim Gwi-seon who provided life phone counseling for 25 years, Kim Ssang-sik who distributed free bread to students, Lee Bok-dan who conducted lunch delivery volunteer work for 15 years, and bus driver Jeong Young-jun who saved lives twice through CPR.

Also participating were Namadi Joel Jin, Korea's first world gold medalist in relay, Park Jong-chan who led the Nuri rocket launch, Yun Seok-deok who developed road color guide lines, and para-rowing athlete Ha Jae-heon. Singer Sean, Yang Hee-eun, and author Jeong Se-rang were also selected.

◆ Diverse Stage Blending Tradition and Modernity

K-performances including pansori and chorus were presented for about 50 minutes before the bell-ringing. LED dance performances symbolizing the Year of the Red Horse lit up the Bosingak area.

After the 33 bell rings, rock band Crying Nut sang their hit 'Maldallija' (Let's Ride Horses), announcing the energetic start of 2026. The venue turned into a frenzy as the symbolism of the Year of the Red Horse met dynamic music.

◆ 1,760 Police Officers Deployed…Thorough Safety Measures

1,760 police officers were deployed for the event. Safety personnel were stationed around Bosingak, and medical booths and 4 cold weather shelters were operated.

Seoul City fully blocked roads around Bosingak from 6 PM on December 31 to 7 AM on January 1. Jonggak Station operated without stopping, and subway and buses extended service until 2 AM.

This year, countdown events were also held in Myeong-dong and Gwanghwamun for the first time. Seoul City established safety plans anticipating approximately 220,000 people at 29 events total.
