◆ 착공 48개월 만에 완공…서울~인천공항 최단거리 연결

인천 영종국제도시와 청라국제도시를 잇는 제3연륙교가 2026년 1월 5일 정식 개통한다. 인천시는 1월 4일 개통 기념행사를 개최하고 다음날 오후 2시부터 차량 통행을 시작한다. 2020년 12월 착공 이후 48개월 만이다.

총사업비 약 7700억 원이 투입된 제3연륙교는 총연장 4.68km, 폭 30m, 왕복 6차로 규모의 해상교량이다. 영종대교·인천대교에 이은 세 번째 연륙교로, 기존 두 다리가 민간 자본으로 건설된 것과 달리 국가 재정으로 건설됐다. 개통으로 송도·영종·청라 세 국제도시가 하나의 공항경제권으로 연결되며, 영종에서 청라까지 이동 시간이 5분대로 단축된다.

◆ 세계 최고 184.2m 해상 전망대…기네스북 등재

제3연륙교의 핵심은 세계 최고 높이 해상교량 전망대다. 주탑 상부 전망대 높이는 184.2m로, 미국 페놉스콧 내로스 다리 전망대(128m)보다 56m 높다. 한국기록원(KRI), 미국 세계기록위원회(WRC), 영국 기네스 세계기록(GWR) 인증을 모두 받았다.

전망대는 60명이 동시 입장해 360도 바다 조망이 가능하다. 맑은 날에는 서울 롯데월드타워와 남산타워까지 보인다. 전망대 외부에는 국내 최초 해상교량 '엣지워크'가 설치된다. 교량 하부에는 미디어파사드로 영상을 투사하는 '바다영화관'이 구축된다. 교량 남측에는 도보·자전거 겸용 도로(폭 3.5~4m)와 바다 조망 전망대 5개소가 조성됐다.

◆ 인천시민 무료 통행…손실보전금 논란은 숙제

통행료는 경차 1000원, 소형차 2000원, 중형 3400원, 대형 4400원이다. 영종·청라 주민은 1월 5일부터 즉시 무료, 인천시민 전체는 4월 1일부터 무료화된다. 법인 차량, 단기 렌터카·리스 차량은 무료 대상에서 제외된다.

인천시는 제3연륙교 개통으로 영종대교·인천대교에 2039년까지 연간 214억 원씩 총 약 2967억 원의 손실보전금을 지급해야 한다. 유정복 인천시장은 손실보전금 구조의 불합리성을 지적하며 국토부·LH에 강력 대응을 예고했다.

유 시장은 "제3연륙교는 인천의 우수한 도시경관을 세계에 알리는 서해의 새로운 랜드마크"라며 "인천이 글로벌 톱텐 시티로 도약하는 핵심 기반이 될 것"이라고 말했다.

◆ Completed in 48 Months…Shortest Route Connecting Seoul to Incheon Airport

The Third Mainland Bridge connecting Yeongjong International City and Cheongna International City will officially open on January 5, 2026. Incheon City will hold an opening ceremony on January 4 and begin vehicle traffic from 2 PM the next day. This comes 48 months after groundbreaking in December 2020.

The Third Mainland Bridge, with total project costs of approximately 770 billion won, is a maritime bridge spanning 4.68km in length, 30m in width, with six lanes. It is the third bridge connecting Yeongjong Island with the mainland, following Yeongjong Bridge and Incheon Bridge, and unlike the previous two built with private capital, was constructed with national funding. The opening connects the three international cities of Songdo, Yeongjong, and Cheongna into one airport economic zone, reducing travel time from Yeongjong to Cheongna to about 5 minutes.

◆ World's Highest 184.2m Maritime Observatory…Guinness Certified

The highlight of the Third Mainland Bridge is the world's highest maritime bridge observatory. The observatory at the top of the main tower reaches 184.2m, 56m higher than the Penobscot Narrows Bridge observatory in the USA (128m). It has received certification from Korea Record Institute (KRI), World Records Committee (WRC), and Guinness World Records (GWR).

The observatory accommodates 60 people simultaneously for 360-degree ocean views. On clear days, Seoul's Lotte World Tower and Namsan Tower are visible. Korea's first maritime bridge 'Edge Walk' is installed on the exterior. A 'Sea Cinema' projecting images via media facade is built under the bridge. A combined pedestrian-bicycle road (3.5-4m width) and five ocean view observation points are created on the south side.

◆ Free Passage for Incheon Citizens…Loss Compensation Controversy Remains

Toll fees are 1,000 won for light vehicles, 2,000 won for small cars, 3,400 won for medium vehicles, and 4,400 won for large vehicles. Yeongjong and Cheongna residents can pass free from January 5, and all Incheon citizens from April 1. Corporate vehicles and short-term rental/lease vehicles are excluded.

Incheon City must pay loss compensation of about 21.4 billion won annually until 2039, totaling approximately 296.7 billion won, to Yeongjong Bridge and Incheon Bridge. Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok announced strong countermeasures against the Ministry of Land and LH, citing the irrationality of the compensation structure.

Mayor Yoo said, "The Third Mainland Bridge is a new landmark of the West Sea showcasing Incheon's excellent urban landscape to the world" and emphasized "it will be the core foundation for Incheon to leap forward as a Global Top Ten City."
