인천시는 기후에너지환경부로부터 전국 광역자치단체 가운데 최초로 환경교육도시로 재지정됐다고 11일 밝혔다. 인천시는 모든 평가 항목에서 우수한 성과를 인정받았다.
◆ 행정·재정 기반 등 모든 평가 항목 우수
이번 재지정은 행정 및 재정적 기반, 지원과 협력 기반, 운영 성과, 협력 및 환류 성과, 계획의 적정성 등 모든 평가 항목에서 우수한 성과를 인정받은 결과다. 환경교육도시는 환경교육의 활성화 및 지원에 관한 법률에 따라 기후에너지환경부가 지정하는 제도로, 지역 주민의 환경의식 제고와 지속 가능한 사회 전환을 촉진하기 위해 행정 및 재정적 지원을 받는다. 인천시는 이번 재지정을 계기로 2028년까지 모든 시민이 참여하는 환경학습 체계 구축, 지역 맞춤형 환경교육 거점 확대, 기후위기 대응 시민 실천운동 강화, 국제기구 협력사업 확대 등을 중점 추진할 계획이다.
◆ 시·교육청·시민단체 긴밀한 협력체계 구축
인천시는 삶의 전환을 실천하는 생태시민 육성을 목표로 시와 교육청, 시민단체 간 긴밀한 협력체계를 마련해왔다. 시는 환경교육 기반 조성과 시민 참여 확대, 사회환경교육 프로그램 강화를 추진했다. 시 교육청은 학교 생태전환교육을 활성화해 학생들의 환경 감수성을 높였으며, 시민단체는 환경교육 네트워크를 중심으로 시민이 주도하는 교육과 실천운동을 펼쳤다. 시는 해양, 자원순환, 기후, 생태 등 다양한 지역 환경현안을 교육자원으로 활용해 시민이 체감할 수 있는 프로그램을 운영하고 있다. 환경교육 전문강사 양성과 활동 지원을 통해 새로운 일자리를 창출해 교육과 고용이 선순환하는 구조를 만들어가고 있다.
◆ 국제기구 협력으로 글로벌 기후위기 대응
인천시는 인천지역 환경 관련 국제기구와의 교류 및 협력 확대를 통해 지역을 넘어 글로벌 기후위기 대응에 앞장서며, 국제적 연대 기반도 강화하고 있다. 유정복 인천시장은 "이번 환경교육도시 재지정은 인천이 지속가능한 미래 도시로 나아가는 중요한 전환점"이라고 말했다. 그는 "학교, 시민, 기업, 행정이 함께 배우고 실천하는 환경공동체 인천을 만들어가겠다"고 덧붙였다.

Incheon City is leading the response to global climate crisis beyond the region and strengthening the international solidarity foundation through expanding exchanges and cooperation with environment-related international organizations in the Incheon area. Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok stated, "This re-designation as an Environmental Education City is an important turning point for Incheon to move forward as a sustainable future city." He added, "We will create 'Environmental Community Incheon' where schools, citizens, companies, and administration learn and practice together."
