◆ 황교안 대표 보궐선거 출마 공식 선언

황교안 자유와혁신 대표가 12일 경기 평택을 국회의원 보궐선거 출마를 공식 선언했다. 황 대표는 입장문을 통해 "무너져가는 대한민국을 바로 세우기 위한 결사 각오로 국회의원 보궐선거 출마를 선언한다"고 밝혔다. 황 대표는 "지금 이 나라가 너무나 무너져 있기 때문에 더 이상 침묵할 수 없어 나서는 결단"이라며 "민주당 이병진 전 의원의 공직선거법 위반으로 공석이 된 경기 평택을에 출마하겠다"고 말했다.

◆ 2020년 총선 이후 6년 만에 국회 도전

황 대표의 국회 도전은 2020년 4월 21대 총선 이후 6년 만이다. 황 대표는 당시 미래통합당 대표 자격으로 서울 종로에 출마했으나 낙선했다. 황 대표는 박근혜 정부에서 법무부 장관과 국무총리, 대통령 권한대행을 지냈다. 2019년부터 2020년까지 자유한국당 대표를 역임했다.

◆ "부정선거 척결, 반국가세력과 투쟁" 공약 제시

황 대표는 이번 출마 선언에서 부정선거 척결을 최우선 과제로 내세웠다. 황 대표는 "부정선거를 척결하고 공정한 선거제도를 만들어내는 선거 개혁을 이뤄내겠다"며 "선거 시스템의 모든 제도적 허점을 바로잡아 누가 보더라도 의심 가지 않는 투명한 선거 제도를 만들겠다"고 말했다. 공약으로 부정선거 척결, 반국가세력과의 투쟁, 청년 중심의 정치 재건 등을 제시했다. 경기 평택을은 이병진 전 의원이 지난 8일 대법원에서 공직선거법 위반 등으로 당선무효형(벌금 700만 원)을 확정받아 의원직을 상실하면서 6·3 지방선거와 함께 보궐선거가 치러진다. 해당 지역에는 양향자 국민의힘 최고위원과 유의동 전 의원 등도 출마를 준비 중인 것으로 전해졌다.

Hwang Kyo-ahn Announces Candidacy for Pyeongtaek-eul By-election

First National Assembly bid in 6 years since 2020 general election defeat

◆ Official announcement of by-election candidacy

Hwang Kyo-ahn, leader of the Freedom and Innovation Party, officially announced his candidacy for the Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek-eul National Assembly by-election on January 12. In a statement, Hwang declared "I announce my candidacy for the by-election with determination to set right our collapsing Republic of Korea." He stated "This is a decision to step forward because I can no longer remain silent as this country is falling apart. I will run in Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek-eul, which became vacant due to former Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Byung-jin's violation of the Public Official Election Act."

◆ First National Assembly bid in 6 years

This marks Hwang's first National Assembly bid in 6 years since the April 2020 general election. He ran in Seoul Jongno as leader of the United Future Party at that time but was defeated. Hwang served as Minister of Justice, Prime Minister, and Acting President during the Park Geun-hye administration. He served as leader of the Liberty Korea Party from 2019 to 2020.

◆ Pledges to "eradicate election fraud"

Hwang placed eradicating election fraud as his top priority in this candidacy announcement. He stated "I will achieve election reform by eradicating election fraud and creating a fair election system. I will correct all institutional loopholes in the election system to create a transparent election system that no one can doubt." His pledges include eradicating election fraud, fighting anti-state forces, and rebuilding youth-centered politics. The Pyeongtaek-eul by-election will be held alongside the June 3 local elections after former lawmaker Lee Byung-jin lost his seat when the Supreme Court finalized his election invalidation (7 million won fine) for violating the Public Official Election Act on January 8. People's Power Party Supreme Council member Yang Hyang-ja and former lawmaker Yoo Ui-dong are also reportedly preparing to run in the district.
