◆ 명동성당 성탄 대축일 낮 미사 집전

천주교 서울대교구가 성탄절인 25일 정오부터 서울 중구 명동성당에서 '주님 성탄 대축일 낮 미사'를 집전했다. 체감온도가 영하권으로 떨어지는 강추위에도 명동성당 앞은 미사를 드리기 위해 찾은 이들로 북적였다. 시민들은 모자, 귀마개, 목도리 등 방한 용품을 둘러싼 채 올 한 해를 정리하고 내년의 행복을 기도하기 위해 이곳을 찾았다. 미사 전 대성당 앞 기도공간에서도 30여 명의 시민들이 초에 불을 붙여 보관함에 넣고 두 손을 모아 기도를 드렸다.

◆ 시민들 "건강·화합 기원"…희망나무에 소망 카드 가득

미사에 참석하기 위해 충북 제천에서 온 김영석(39세)씨는 내년 소원을 묻는 질문에는 "올해 조금 나쁜 일이 있었다"며 "무엇보다 건강했으면 한다"고 답했다.박영미(74) 씨는 "요즘 나라가 혼란스러운 시기인 만큼 주님께서 화합할 수 있는 계기를 만들어주셨으면 좋겠다"며 "개인적으로는 내 주위에 있는 모든 사람들과 나를 알지 못하는 사람들도 모두가 행복한 내년을 맞이하기를 바라는 마음으로 기도했다"고 말했다. 명동성당 앞에는 '희망나무'라고 불리는 대형 크리스마스 트리가 설치됐다. 트리에는 각자의 소원을 담은 눈사람 모양의 소망 카드가 주렁주렁 걸려 있었다. 시민들은 소망 카드에 '2026년도 무탈하고 행복하길', '돈 많이 우리 가족 건강!', '고3 무탈하게 잘 보내고 대학 합격하게 해주세요' 등 가족의 건강과 행복, 학업 성취를 비는 소원을 새겨넣었다. 소망 카드를 적고 나무에 건 조모(26) 씨는 "현재 비수도권에서 일하고 있는 공무원인데 수도권으로 전입하게 해달라고 소원을 빌었다"며 "크리스마스 때마다 명동성당에 오는데 올 때마다 신나는 기분이 든다"고 말했다.

◆ 크리스마스 마켓 북적…개신교도 성탄 예배 진행

미사가 끝나자 명동성당 가톨릭회관 앞에 차려진 약 20개의 크리스마스 기념 마켓에도 사람이 붐볐다. 마켓에서는 수공예 성물, 나무 십자가, 천 묵주, 기도초 등 성당 관련 물품은 물론 전통 문화 상품, 스테인드 글라스 등을 판매했다. 부스 한 켠에는 소시지, 군밤 등 먹거리도 판매했다. 개신교 교회들도 이날 성탄절 예배를 진행했다. 여의도순복음교회는 오전 7시부터 오후 6시까지 여섯 차례에 걸쳐 여의도대성전에서 성탄 축하 예배를 올렸다. 이영훈 담임목사는 오전 9시와 11시, 오후 1시 예배에서 성탄의 의미를 전했다. 사랑의교회는 오전 8시와 10시, 정오에 '2025년 성탄 축하 온가족연합예배'를 진행했다. 성탄의 의미를 되새기며 아기 예수 탄생을 축하하는 뜻을 담은 유아 세례식도 거행했다.

Kim Ro-hwan (39), who came from Jecheon, North Chungcheong Province to attend mass, said, "Since it's Christmas, I specially spent 4 hours to come here" and "I remember the priest's words telling us to take one step forward first and spread love." When asked about wishes for next year, he said, "I had some bad things happen this year" and "More than anything, I hope for good health." Hong Soon-hong (74) said, "Since the country is going through a chaotic time these days, I hope the Lord will create an opportunity for harmony" and "Personally, I prayed hoping that everyone around me and even those who don't know me will all have a happy new year." A large Christmas tree called the 'Hope Tree' was installed in front of Myeongdong Cathedral. Snowman-shaped wish cards containing individual wishes hung abundantly on the tree. Citizens wrote wishes for family health and happiness, academic achievement on the wish cards, including 'May 2026 be safe and happy,' 'Lots of money and family health!,' and 'Please let me get through senior year safely and get into college.' Jo (26), who wrote a wish card and hung it on the tree, said, "I'm a civil servant currently working outside the metropolitan area, and I wished to transfer to the metropolitan area" and "I come to Myeongdong Cathedral every Christmas, and I feel excited every time I come."

◆ Christmas Market Bustles…Protestant Churches Also Hold Christmas Services

After mass ended, about 20 Christmas commemorative markets set up in front of the Catholic Center at Myeongdong Cathedral were also crowded with people. The markets sold church-related items such as handcrafted religious articles, wooden crosses, cloth rosaries, and prayer candles, as well as traditional cultural products and stained glass. One corner of the booths also sold food items such as sausages and roasted chestnuts. Protestant churches also held Christmas services on this day. Yoido Full Gospel Church held Christmas celebration services six times from 7 AM to 6 PM at Yoido Grand Sanctuary. Senior Pastor Lee Young-hoon delivered the meaning of Christmas at the 9 AM, 11 AM, and 1 PM services. Sarang Church held the '2025 Christmas Celebration Family United Service' at 8 AM, 10 AM, and noon. An infant baptism ceremony was also held to reflect on the meaning of Christmas and celebrate the birth of baby Jesus.
