◆ 뉴욕 법원, 권도형에 징역 15년 선고

폴 엥겔마이어 뉴욕 남부연방지방법원 판사가 11일(현지시간) 권도형(34) 전 테라폼랩스 대표에게 징역 15년을 선고했다. 엥겔마이어 판사는 사기 혐의를 유죄로 인정했다. 판사는 "권씨의 범죄로 사람들이 400억 달러(약 58조9000억원)를 잃었다"고 밝혔다. 이어 "단순한 종이상 손실이 아니라 세대를 초월한 사기"라고 판단했다. 판사는 피해자가 100만 명에 달할 수 있다고 추정했다.

◆ 테라·루나 폭락, 글로벌 암호화폐 한파 촉발

권씨가 발행한 테라USD는 알고리즘 기반 스테이블코인이다. 2022년 5월 달러 연동이 무너졌다. 루나는 며칠 만에 99% 넘게 폭락했다. 이 사태가 '2022년 암호화폐 한파'를 촉발했다. 세계 최대 거래소 FTX 붕괴로 이어졌다. FTX 창업자 샘 뱅크먼-프리드는 사기 혐의로 징역 25년을 선고받았다. 권씨는 2022년 4월 싱가포르로 출국했다. 약 1년간 해외 도피 후 2023년 3월 몬테네그로 포드고리차 공항에서 체포됐다. 권씨는 재판에서 "피해자 증언을 들으며 소름 끼쳤다"며 선처를 호소했다.

◆ Sentence Exceeds Prosecution Request...Korean Prison Transfer Denied

Prosecutors requested 12 years. Kwon's defense attorneys requested 5 years. Judge Engelmayer ruled the prosecution's 12-year request was "unjustly lenient" and the defense's 5-year request was "unimaginably absurd." Kwon's request to serve his sentence in South Korea was denied. Kwon faces charges in South Korea for violations of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes. His spouse and 4-year-old daughter reside in South Korea. Kwon received a reduction from 9 charges to 2 in exchange for pleading guilty. He agreed to forfeit $19 million (approximately 28 billion won). All original charges could have resulted in a maximum 135-year sentence.

◆ Terra-Luna Crash Triggered Global Crypto Winter

TerraUSD, issued by Kwon, was an algorithm-based stablecoin. The dollar peg collapsed in May 2022. Luna plunged more than 99% within days. This incident triggered the "2022 crypto winter." It led to the collapse of FTX, one of the world's largest exchanges. FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried received a 25-year sentence for fraud. Kwon left for Singapore in April 2022. After approximately one year on the run, he was arrested at Podgorica Airport in Montenegro in March 2023. Kwon appealed for leniency at trial, stating, "I was chilled hearing victim testimonies."
