인천광역시교육청(교육감 도성훈)은 10월 24일 열린 교육부 정기 제4차 중앙투자심사에서 (가칭)영종하늘5중학교 신설사업이 최종 승인됐다고 28일 밝혔다. 학교는 인천 중구 중산동 1878-2 일원(16,940.9㎡)에 들어서며 2029년 3월 개교를 목표로 추진된다.
◆ 영종하늘도시 학령인구 증가 대응
학교 신설은 영종하늘도시 내 학령인구 증가와 기존 학교의 과밀, 원거리 통학 문제를 해소하기 위한 조치다. 시교육청은 부지 적정성, 접근성, 도시계획 여건 등을 검토해 파크골프장 부지를 학교 부지로 확정했다. 인천경제자유구역청 등 관계기관과 협력해 행정절차를 진행했으며, 주민과 대화하며 지역 의견을 반영했다.
도성훈 교육감은 "(가칭)영종하늘5중학교 신설은 지역사회의 염원 속에서 함께 이룬 결실"이라며 "2029년 3월 개교가 차질 없이 이루어질 수 있도록 안전하고 미래지향적인 교육공간 조성에 최선을 다하겠다"고 밝혔다. 이번 중앙투자심사에서는 조건부 승인을 받았던 (가칭)영종하늘2초, (가칭)용현학익중, (가칭)계양1초도 조건을 충족해 개교 추진이 본격화됐다.

In this central investment review, (tentative name) Yeongjong Haneul 2 Elementary School, (tentative name) Yonghyeon Hagiik Middle School, and (tentative name) Gyeyang 1 Elementary School, which had received conditional approval, also met conditions and their opening promotion was accelerated.
