캄보디아 선교·여행 취소 잇따라

캄보디아에서 한국인 대학생이 납치·고문을 당해 숨지는 등 강력범죄가 잇따르면서, 현지 여행이나 선교 활동에 대한 불안감이 확산하고 있다. 14일 취재를 종합하면 수원시의 A교회는 이번 주말 신도들과 캄보디아로 단기 선교를 떠날 계획이었으나, 최근의 사태를 고려해 취소했다.

A교회 관계자는 "아무래도 상황이 이렇다 보니 이번 일정은 취소했고, 다른 나라로 변경할 예정"이라고 말했다.

대통령실 여행경보 격상 검토

캄보디아 내 한국인을 상대로 한 납치·고문·살인사건과 더불어 실종신고마저 전국적으로 급증하자, 대통령실은 이날 캄보디아에 내린 여행경보 격상을 검토하겠다고 발표했다.

외교부는 지난 10일 오후 9시(한국 시간)를 기점으로 캄보디아 수도인 프놈펜 시에 대한 여행경보 2단계(여행 자제)를 특별여행주의보로 상향 조정했다. 특별여행주의보는 여행경보 2단계 이상 3단계(출국 권고) 이하에 해당한다.

특별여행주의보 발령 지역

현재 캄보디아 내 특별여행주의보는 프놈펜 시를 비롯해 웃더민체이 주, 프레아비히어 주, 반테이민체이 주, 파일린 주, 바탐방 주, 푸르사트 주, 코콩 주, 시하누크빌 주, 캄폿주 보코산 지역 등에 발령돼 있다. 나머지 지역은 1단계(여행 유의)에 속한다.

외교부는 "캄보디아 내 특별여행주의보 발령 지역 방문을 계획하고 있는 국민들께서는 긴급한 용무가 아닌 한 방문을 취소하거나 연기해 달라"고 당부했다.

여행업계 수요 급감 전망

여행업계도 냉랭한 분위기를 감지하고 있다. 캄보디아는 단체 선교 활동이나 출장, 친지 방문, 카지노를 목적으로 찾는 경우가 대부분인데 당분간 이 수요가 급감하지 않겠냐는 게 업계의 의견이다.

오산시의 한 여행사 관계자는 "단순 관광을 위해 가려고 했던 사람들도 안 가지 않겠느냐. 지금 캄보디아에 간다는 건 의문스럽게도 보이는 사안"이라면서 "거의 안 간다고 보면 된다"고 했다.

동남아 전반 불안감 확산

여행 정보를 공유하는 온라인 게시판 등에는 '캄보디아 무서워서 당분간 여행 가기 힘들 것 같다', '아이와 가족 여행을 계획했는데 취소해야 할 것 같다'는 내용의 글이 이어지고 있다. 범죄 소식으로 고조된 여행에 대한 불안감은 캄보디아뿐 아니라 인접 국가인 베트남, 태국 등 동남아 전반으로 번지는 양상이다.

Presidential office considers raising travel alert

As kidnappings, torture, and murder cases targeting Koreans in Cambodia as well as missing person reports increased nationwide, the Presidential Office announced on this day that it would consider raising the travel alert issued to Cambodia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs raised the travel alert level 2 (refrain from travel) for Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, to a special travel advisory as of 9 p.m. (Korean time) on the 10th. The special travel advisory corresponds to travel alert level 2 or higher and level 3 (recommendation to leave) or lower.

Areas with special travel advisory

Currently, the special travel advisory in Cambodia has been issued for Phnom Penh City, Oddar Meanchey Province, Preah Vihear Province, Banteay Meanchey Province, Pailin Province, Battambang Province, Pursat Province, Koh Kong Province, Sihanoukville Province, and Bokor Mountain area in Kampot Province. The remaining areas fall under level 1 (caution advised).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested, "We ask citizens planning to visit areas with special travel advisories in Cambodia to cancel or postpone their visits unless it is urgent business."

Travel industry expects sharp demand decline

The travel industry is also sensing a cold atmosphere. The industry's opinion is that demand will plummet for the time being, as most people visit Cambodia for group missionary activities, business trips, visiting relatives, or casinos.

An official from a travel agency in Osan City said, "People who were going to go for simple tourism probably won't go either. Going to Cambodia now is a questionable matter," adding "You can consider it as almost no one going."

Anxiety spreads throughout Southeast Asia

Online bulletin boards that share travel information continue to post messages such as 'I think it will be difficult to travel to Cambodia for the time being because it's scary' and 'I had planned a family trip with my child but I think I need to cancel it.' The anxiety about travel heightened by news of crimes is spreading not only to Cambodia but also to neighboring countries such as Vietnam and Thailand throughout Southeast Asia.
