◆ 국내 최초 MW급 PEM 수전해 실증 완료
한국가스공사(사장 최연혜)는 2일 제주도에서 1MW PEM 수전해 시스템을 활용해 5,000시간 실증 운전을 완료하고 총 13톤의 그린수소를 공급했다고 밝혔다. 가스공사는 지난해 국내 최초로 제주도에서 그린수소 생산에 성공한 바 있다. PEM(고분자 전해질 막) 수전해 방식은 부하 대응이 빠르고 장치 소형화가 가능해 차세대 수전해 기술로 주목받고 있다.
◆ 2020년 사업 착수…수소버스 시범운행 지원
가스공사는 2020년 산업통상자원부가 지원하고 제주에너지공사가 주관하는 '그린수소 생산 및 저장 시스템 기술개발 사업' 컨소시엄에 참여했다. 제주 행원풍력발전단지에 국내 최초 1MW급 고압 PEM 수전해 시스템을 구축했다. 지난해 7월부터 실증 운전으로 생산한 수소를 제주 함덕 그린수소 충전소에 공급하며 '제주 수소연료전지버스 시범 운행 사업'을 지원해 왔다. 누적 생산량 13톤은 수소연료전지버스 약 700대를 충전할 수 있는 양이다.
◆ 제주에너지공사에 사용권 이전…청정수소 생태계 구축
가스공사는 제주도 내 유일한 수소 생산시설인 이 시스템의 사용 권리를 제주에너지공사에 제공한다. 경제성 높은 그린수소를 안정적으로 생산할 수 있는 체계를 구축하고 제주도가 추진하는 '카본 프리 아일랜드' 사업에 기여한다는 방침이다. 가스공사는 향후 시스템 운영 과정에서 생성되는 현장 데이터를 제주에너지공사로부터 제공받아 후속 연구과제에 활용할 계획이다. 가스공사 관계자는 "MW급 PEM 수전해 시스템 운영 기술을 고도화해 국내 청정수소 생태계 활성화에 힘쓰겠다"고 말했다.

◆ Project Launched in 2020…Supporting Hydrogen Bus Pilot Program
Korea Gas Corporation joined the 'Green Hydrogen Production and Storage System Technology Development Project' consortium in 2020, supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and led by Jeju Energy Corporation. The corporation built Korea's first 1MW-class high-pressure PEM water electrolysis system at Jeju Haengwon Wind Farm. Since July last year, it has supplied hydrogen produced through demonstration operations to the Jeju Hamdeok Green Hydrogen Charging Station, supporting the 'Jeju Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Pilot Operation Project.' The cumulative production of 13 tons is enough to charge approximately 700 hydrogen fuel cell buses.
◆ Usage Rights Transferred to Jeju Energy Corporation…Building Clean Hydrogen Ecosystem
Korea Gas Corporation will provide usage rights for this system, the only hydrogen production facility in Jeju, to Jeju Energy Corporation. The plan is to establish a system for stable production of cost-effective green hydrogen and contribute to Jeju's 'Carbon Free Island' initiative. Korea Gas Corporation plans to receive field data generated during system operation from Jeju Energy Corporation and utilize it for follow-up research projects. A corporation official stated, "We will advance MW-class PEM water electrolysis system operation technology and strive to vitalize the domestic clean hydrogen ecosystem."
